Jessica’s House does not arrange payday loans for Quebec residents, and no licensed lender in the province offers them in the form you see elsewhere in Canada. If you live in Quebec and need money before payday, this page explains why, and points you to options that cost far less.

Why payday loans don’t work under Quebec’s limit

A two-week payday loan at $14 per $100 is an annual rate of about 365%. Quebec has long held that consumer credit above 35% a year is excessive, which is roughly one tenth of that. At 35%, a $500 two-week loan could cost about $6.70, which is far below what payday lenders charge, so the product is not offered.

Lower-cost options in Quebec

  • Your caisse or bank: ask about overdraft protection or a small personal line of credit.
  • Fonds d’entraide Desjardins: budget help and, in some regions, small interest-free emergency loans.
  • ACEF budget consultations: the Associations coopératives d’économie familiale offer free budget and debt advice across the province.
  • Your employer: a pay advance on wages you have already earned.

Watch out for offshore lenders

Some websites offer payday loans to Quebec residents from outside the province. If a lender ignores Quebec law, it is unlikely to respect your rights when something goes wrong. Never pay any fee before receiving a loan.

Quebec consumer protection law applies to you as a Quebec resident. A lender that offers you a payday loan anyway is not following Quebec’s rules.

Ask your caisse or bank about overdraft or a small line of credit, ask your employer about a pay advance, or get free budget help from an ACEF.

Some are lead-generation sites or lenders based outside Quebec. Be cautious and never pay a fee up front.
