Payday loans Manitoba: a lower limit, by design

Manitoba caps a payday loan at 30% of your net pay, one of the lowest limits in Canada, and sharply limits the cost of a repeat loan.

Last reviewed: October 2026Checked against: federal & provincial payday loan rulesReading time: 3 min

Manitobans can apply online with payday lenders licensed under The Consumer Protection Act. Internet lenders need the same licence as storefronts and follow the same rules. Manitoba’s approach is to keep loans small, so they fit inside one paycheque.

How Manitoba works out your limit

The lender takes your net income for the most recent month you were paid, multiplies it by 12 and divides by 26 to get a two-week figure. You can borrow 30% of that. If you took home $2,600 last month, your calculated net pay is $1,200 and your limit is $360.

The repeat-loan discount

If you take a new loan within seven days of repaying the last one, or the loan is extended or renewed, the lender can charge no more than $5 per $100. On a $360 loan, that is $18 instead of $50.40. It is meant to stop the cost from compounding when borrowers come back quickly.

Collections

A Manitoba lender cannot contact your employer to collect a debt, except for limited employment checks before the loan. If you are charged more than the law allows, you can recover the whole fee.
